Optometrists and GPs need to improve diabetic care

Two studies from The University of Western Australia have found that optometrists and general practitioners – who play an important role in primary eye care – can improve their management of diabetic patients at risk of eye damage.

Young people with diabetes get a helping hand

Helping young people with diabetes to self-manage their health and improve diabetes control is the objective of a new support service in the Hunter and New England being headed by Professor Lin Perry from the University of Technology, Sydney.

Aussies overdosing on salt

Australian researchers have shown overweight and obese people with type 2 diabetes are eating dangerously high levels of salt – or more than double what they should for good health.

Type 2 Diabetes Management

In the initial stages of diagnosis, people with type 2 diabetes should routinely be offered a trial of lifestyle modification including diet, exercise and weight reducing strategies.

Higher and more complex workload for GPs

A new report shows that GPs in Australia are coping with a higher workload, as well as an increase in complex consultations and management of chronic diseases.

Insulin Therapy in Diabetes Management

A new set of guidelines, endorsed by the NHMRC, was published recently by Diabetes Australia and the RACGP. The National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) offers people with diabetes access to diabetes-related products such as blood glucose testing strips, and insulin pump consumables at heavily subsidised prices and free insulin needles and syringes. If you have a patient with diabetes, register them with the NDSS and assist them to manage their diabetes. Registration is free and done only once.
