New website shows over $5.8 billion spent on mental health services

Over $5.8 billion, or $272 per Australian, was spent on mental health-related services in 2008–09, according to a new mental health services in Australia website unveiled today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

To sleep or not to sleep

Insomnia (and sleep disturbance) is one of the most common presenting symptoms in the primary care setting. While distressing in itself, insomnia also increases vulnerability to depression.

Depression and Insomnia

According to the Family Doctor Association, a recent survey has revealed, “the number of patients displaying symptoms of stress or depression over the last 18 months has increased according to GPs, with more than three-quarters (78%) of those surveyed reporting a rise. Just under half (49%) of patients feeling the pressure were suffering from sleep disorders.” According to a recent paper in Australian Family Physician, depression is the most common cause of insomnia, and insomnia is highly prevalent in depression.

GP Training

The Federal Government has increased funding for GP supervisors who are teaching and training the next generation of GPs.

Patient safety compromised by interruptions to doctors

Emergency doctors complete interrupted tasks in a shorter time than uninterrupted tasks and fail to return to 18.5 per cent of interrupted tasks.
