Seniors urged to get eye test to prevent falls
A simple eye examination can significantly reduce an elderly person’s risk of a fall, according to Optometrists Association Australia, who is urging senior Australians to get their eyes tested.
“Visual impairment is a major reason why older people experience falls. Yet almost 75 per
cent of people who fall because of poor vision have a condition that could have been
prevented or corrected,” said optometrist and falls prevention expert, Alex Black.
At least a third of people aged over 65 fall each year, making it one of the leading causes of
hospital admissions among elderly people.
“Eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma often develop as people age and can double
the risk of falls. Studies show about 40 per cent of older people with glaucoma experience
falls,” Mr Black said.
“The earlier eye disease is detected and treated, the better chance a person has of improving
their vision and eye health for better overall wellbeing.”
According to Mr Black, there can be adverse psychological impacts associated with falling.
“Fear of falling may increase anxiety and depression about reduced independence for an
older person,” he said. “Many people are embarrassed about sharing their experience of a fall
with health professionals, but we can help to identify the best solutions based on your health
and lifestyle.
“Changes to eye health can be gradual, and serious conditions can progress without any
obvious symptoms, so it is important to have regular eye examinations with an optometrist to
detect changes that can go easily unnoticed.
“There are some simple things older Australians can do to reduce falls, such as keeping fit
and active, ensuring there is appropriate lighting in your home and marking stairs or steps
with contrasting tape for better visibility.”
Through appropriate treatment, referral and education, optometrists can play a major role in
optimising visual function in older people, as part of a shared-care approach to preventing falls.
Eye examinations attract a Medicare rebate and no referral is required.
