Healthy environment, healthy you

Possibly the most important factor in warding off viruses is hygiene.

Colds and flu are highly contagious and spread when infected people cough or sneeze, sending virus-laden droplets into the air.

If you come into contact with contaminated surfaces, simply by touching your nose, mouth or eyes you can transfer the virus into your system.

Obviously it’s not possible to avoid germs everywhere you go, but a few simple steps can help cut down the risk of transmission:

  • Always throw away tissues immediately after use
  • Wash hands thoroughly
  • Cover your mouth when you cough
  • Do not touch your nose or eyes in particular if you can help it
  • Use a germ-killing surface spray, especially on commonly used surface such as telephone handsets, communal work and kitchen surfaces, doorknobs, computer mice and remote controls
  • Beware of chemicals contained in commonly used cleaning products and deodorisers, some of which contain synthetic fragrances that may trigger children’s asthma or allergies
